Hacker Runs Ubuntu on Amazon’s Kindle
Amazon’s Kindle family of e-book readers has changed the game on e-books and e-book distribution, by making an intuitive, easy to use e-paper reader into a mass-market publishing platform. Books are now sold on many websites as “Hardcover, Paperback, Kindle”, referencing the format of the book’s publication in varying editions. Now, a hacker has put a variation of Linux on a Kindle 2, raising the question as to what Amazon might do to enhance the device’s range of operative capabilities.

ince we reported on the July numbers from the same source, Linux market share has dropped from 2.02 percent to 1.97 percent, while Win7 has grown from 1.24 to 1.69 percent. At this rate it will be surprising if Windows 7 fails to overtake Linux before its official launch on October 22. The figure for all versions of Windows has, however, dropped a tad from 86.56 to 86.44 percent of the market.

…yesterday we were notified that the Microsoft representative in charge with the education strategy had requested the organizers to pull the Ubuntu presentation because it is ‘unfair competition’ to hold such a presentation at an event sponsored by them. They are indeed co-sponsors but the conference is organized by the Ministry of Education and its local office, and is being held on the premises of a public University.

It was in January 1999, and the latest version of the free OS, Linux 2.2.0, had been released. I upgraded from the version I was using. The new version operating system used less memory; applications I was using got faster, and ran more smoothly.
